Mercury fillings nearly killed me....thanks FDA, ADA, mainstream medical doctors...and anyone else too stupid enough to read high school level biology and chemistry books.....just google 'mercury fillings diseases'..and watch out for the misleading information claiming safety of mercury and look at the stories of people across the country getting better of weird incurable diseases.....100 mental and physical diseases causally linked...drugs anyone? we sure are not being given answers to cures or causes but there seems to be plenty of drugs to go around for symptoms.....

And how might a fetus be at risk from Amalgam fillings? I thought fillings were for teeth...

It never fails to amaze me how the government can be so slow at doing the right thing. How can mercury fillings be safe for those with a mouth full of it and but not for the dentist? O.K. There is the heat that causes vapor during removal, but I think a life-time exposure to mercury has to have a negative effect, right?

It seems strange that country after country in Europe is banning amalgam - whether on the ecological issue or the health issue- , Health Canada Canada has essentially limited amalgam use to men and post0menopausal women, and the USA seems to ignore all this and the FDA seems to "KNOW BETTER" by not accepting science. It is a sad day when profits win over protection of human health and life.

David Kennedy's comment is right on. The new "special controls" are not even as stringent as the warnings in the manufacturers' package inserts.

Reading the ruling shows how carefully the FDA excluded all the literature that doesn't support their position. The sum of the literature still shows how the amount of mercury absorbed from amalgam exceeds many agencies' published safety limits.

If you carefully read the MSDS for precapsulated dispersalloy the manufacturer J&J has numerous warnings that the FDA has chosen to deny the patient even explaining away the obligation to disclose the principle ingredient is mercury by saying it is called silver because of color.

If I sold a brass ring as gold that would be fraud right?

Dental personnel are being injured. There are case controlled studies of women in dentistry rendered infertile from occupational exposure.

OSHA requires by law that exposed employees be given informed consent, training and medically monitored. Written records of these steps must be maintained for 30 years. No records? You are guilty.

We cannot legally open an amalgam capsule without numerous engineering controls and work practices yet is is supposedly safe.

Why this ruling? Because the FDA is a puppet of the dental industry and is protecting the industry and not the public.

Dr. Horowitz has an excellent point. Sounds like the FDA is in a Catch 22 situation on this issue. I think the logic is that H1N1 is likely to kill more of us quicker than mercury fillings... So let's tell everyone mercury is safe (at least in vaccinations) and only marginally unsafe in dental fillings.

Let's be clear, the classification (ClassII) assigned implies increased risk, though the contention is that it is as safe as it has always been believed to be?
How about to the unborn? Do check the Sept 2006 public hearing transcript on dental amalgam. The scientific panel voted 13:7 against the FDA's position supported in its White Paper. The questions that remain unanswered regarding exposure are the same as the gaps reported in previous reviews.
The decision to not ban mercury or at least classify as a ClassIII undermines common sense.
From an environmental perspective alone mercury fillings are a hazard.
