Amen Carol!

We Nutritionists beg, beg and plead with parents not to be so lassiez-faire with their kids and giving them ridiculous amounts of sweets, treats, and juice. WE have 5 month olds drinking pints of juice a day! it starts so early. I beg parents to clean their childrens teeth 2 times a day! Not just let the kids do it cause they will not do a good job!

Its like beating a dead horse. WE have SOME really good parents of all backgrounds who have been scared enough! Unfortunately-lazy parents come in all sizes, colors, backgrounds and socioeconomic situations. All in all: Its tiring!

How about we expect Americans to clean between their teeth with something every day JUST LIKE IT'S COMMONLY EXPECTED TO BRUSH? STOP teaching our kids that it's OK to eat mounds of sugar with no interproximal hygiene. Teach kids in schools to put something between their teeth daily, even if it's a toothpick or a rubber tip. The first thing I ask my patients at their recall appointment is "What are you doing to clean between your teeth?" I also mention that their is some evidence linking gum disease to heart disease if I think it will scare them enough. Who knows what that connection is? It is not my responsibility to fix teeth belonging to people who don't care to accept responsibility for them. Ignorance is no excuse but we must educate through schools and then try to figure out how to make smarter people who succeed in life. I'd love to start a foundation that fixes people's teeth but before they can get treatment from me, they join Interproximal's Anonymous.

It is our obligation as a profession to arrive at a solution to meet the demand for affordable quality dental care. Some may do their part by donating time to serve Medicaid. Others may find that their practice needs to step away from insurance companies and forge their own path. We as a collective whole have the power to determine our futures. We better decide where we want to be and make a collective move in that direction. Otherwise, we can all look forward to the demise of our profession in the hands of the government mandates and an antiquated insurance system that are driving our profession into the ground if we continue to let them.
