Joke of the Week: “When Pigs Fly”

Obama joke“It was once said that pigs would fly before Americans would elect a black president.

“Indeed, we’re 100 days into the Obama presidency… and SWINE FLU!!“

If you don’t get the pun, try saying the joke out loud.

This joke has led to some controversy online, with a few calling it racist. In reprinting the joke here, we are simply sharing a silly pun. The only comment we feel this joke makes as regards race relations is the fact that, until it happened, the US electing an African-American president seemed unlikely.

    Thoughts on Pigs Flying

    One can find lots of “when pigs fly” events…

    100 Years Ago: Possibly the first occurrence of a pig actually flying occurred in 1909 when the British aviation pioneer Lord Brabazon made the first live air cargo flight with a pig in a basket tied to a wing-strut of his airplane.

    For those of you with a historical or economics background; an African-American being elected president could be termed a “Black Swan” event.

    For those not familiar with Black Swan theory, it refers to how everyone assumed all swans were white until a black swan was discovered.

    A “Black Swan Event” meets the following criteria: (from Wikipedia)

    - The event is a surprise.
    - The event has a major impact.
    - After the fact, the event is rationalized by hindsight, as if it was expected to occur.
