Fluoridated bottled waterAustralia is considering a proposal to fluoridate bottled water, and the Australian Dental Association supports it, noting that people are drinking less tap water.

  1. There is absolutely no science that shows drinking fluoride-free bottled water leads to more tooth decay. However, studies do show that soda drinking leads to more tooth decay. Soda and other bottled drinks are often fluoridated because tap water is used in the processing.

Dentists want to put on the blame on bottled water because, as fluoridation of public water supplies is growing, so is tooth decay. Both the US and Australia are about 70% fluoridated. However, dental fluorosis is growing also indicating, not a lack of fluoride, but a fluoride overdose.
The US CDC reports that 48% of 6 – 12 year-olds have some form of fluorosis.

Instead of pushing fluoridated bottled water, dentistry needs to promote the fluoride labeling of all foods and beverages so parents and dentists don’t unknowingly overdose children.

The push for fluoridated water did not originate from organized dentistry but from the manufacturers who will profit from the sale of fluoridated bottled water. As usual dentists run with the ball so the corporations can stay in the background.

  2. I agree with the first comment that fluoride has caused more problems than help. The outside enamel may get harder but the bacteria still penetrate the grooves and bomb out the inside of the tooth as has been seen when sealants are air abraded and caries detector is used. Ingested fluoride does not just go to the teeth it goes to the bones, making them brittle. The research scientists at the FDA who researched fluoride quit when their research regarding the problems with fluoride were ignored.

  3. FAN released a statement last year signed by over 600 professionals calling for an end to fluoridation and a call to legislators in fluoridating countries to hold hearings to determine why, after the release of the landmark National Research Council report in 2006, aggressive promotion of fluoridation continues.

The over 1,000 signers represent a remarkable coming together of those concerned about fluoride and those concerned about mercury issues; doctors practicing conventional medicine and those pursuing alternative treatments and the public health and the environmental health communities. All believe that public health policy should be determined honestly with full attention paid to sound science and to ethical principles.
