Of course, dentists do not want hygienists to be independent it would cut into their profit margin. Eventhough we spend the majority of time with the patient and find all of the problematic areas before they come into the room to do a 2 minute examination.
Please, look and compere with physiotherapists, all are working quite independently.
It should be the same with dental hygienists, shouldn’t it.

There have been independent hygienists here in British Columbia for a few years. It’s nice going to a hygiene office because there are no drill noises or bad smells. The level of care is actually improved since the hygienist has a business to run and also refers walk-in patients to a colleague/dentist.
However, patients must see a dentist once a year. Hmmm. A woman can go to a midwife in this province, deliver her baby and she never once has to see a doctor. It’s really about control and politics…………..
