Dental Peer Review Leaves Some Dentists Disappointed
Half of Dentists Report Trouble with Dental Boards
In our most recent survey, we asked dentists if they have been disappointed by dental peer review. Respondents were split on the issue; 47% reported having problems, while the remaining 53% had no issues with dental boards.
“I think it is a fair process to both the patient and the dentist,” commented one dentist. Another disagreed, saying, “The dentist is assumed guilty; it’s a witch hunt even if you are innocent.”

As victim of dental malpractice…I found your site most interesting.I am a victim of being hit in the mouth with a metal set pipe, fracturing my teeth from cheekbone to cheekbone….I ended up in a dentist’s chair here in California who lined my jawswith a “semi precious inert secret ingredient” was his broken record claim to my attorney,as I had to litigate since my dentalplan and peer review board couldn’t; be bothered. Califronia’s Peer Review system is very uneven…and in serious need of overhaul. It serves more as a Peer Practitioner Protection racket..as many a patent here has learned the hard way.
I had a VERY severe reaction to the core metal in crowns he shoved in my face from ear to ear…I watched my skin turn yellow, damage to my liver and spleen, tearing a herniain my stomach wall from the reaction of throwing up 5 times a day for each and and every day of 6 plus years awiating my day in court.IN thelast years I was throwing up blood in my hands,I have never been so ill in my entire life. I had such severe galvanic currency from reaction of the metal to the pins placed from root canals he insisted I had to have. they were measuared with an ohm meter and were excessivley high.. -9,plus 7,plu10,minus 5 etc…and set off by a glass of milk, eating bread, drinking orange juice..it made the muscles in my face fluueer likea cattleprod wasplaced along my jaws…. each year getting progressively worse untilthe muscles would KNOTunder my skin and drop me to my knees for htree hours of grabbing my head in utter agony as tears ran down my face for hours.
I had to go to the LAPD to find out exactly WHAT the material was to provide my attorney “incontrevertble proof for court…..that FDA & ADA approved material htat is STILL being used in dental restorations turned otu to be a KNOWN carcinogenic called Gallium….the spectral anlysis lab called in utter shock…as it is an ARSENIC Based material used in computer chips, jewelry binding and rat poison…. and did belong in ANY patients mouth…known since 1951 by OSHA and labeled a carcinogen. You can read abotut is in the 1996 Toronto School of Dentistry report by Dorothy Mc Coombs…it is banned in MANY countries in the world… but not the USA.WHY I ask, wouldANY reputable dentist allowthis awful stuffto be placed intoANY patients mouth.Itys; fracture rate in one year is 68%, it turns torust in peopls’mouths wihtin 6 to 10months,and I had it flushing thoruhg muy blood streamfor 7years as my ataomrey sat in his hands.. and ultimately was provided an
insentive” to quit his lawfirm the night before a mandatory settement confernce and dumpme on a substaitute attorney unable to get LA Superior Court to grant her the courteousy of a 10 day extension tolearn the parameters of my case…Iwasforce dot accept an out focourt settlenet htat did not cover the cost of the estimated repairs of $45,000.00..no painn,no suffering,no repair fothe hernia it saddled me with that cuts off my breathing if I bend over at the waist, nor correct the altered eyesight caused from the severe galavanic currency circling my left eye….from 4 to 9.. anything viewed at the angle become doubled…Iamleft with my health severly dmaged,my acxreer shut down, and saddled with $20,000. in un reimbursed legal and medical fees that proved my case in court..I WON in court ! yippee wahoo…you ‘ll excuse me if Iam NOT passing otu baloons and throwing confetti..NO Patient should have to endure that. As the dnteiost was a former chemist and jhad hisown in house lab,he knew darn well WHAT he put into my face.. of which I have seen a brochure touting to dentists”Here’s the material that will boost your profit margin in lab fees”… even if it kills a patient.
SO armed with my lousy %25,000.00 settlement,I was laughed out of five dental offices trying to find someone who could repair the amount of dmaage done to me with the award I had in hand. Ifound one who assired me his skills were commensurate with the taskat hand and could work within the budgetI had…he instituted on a string of pre conditions that wre all met… deep planing ~ NEVER AGAIN ~ laser vaprorizingod diseased tissue at the base of each tooth..my mouth was chimney of blue smoke and burning flesh for four horrible sessions, multiple root canals and TMJ correction and stabilzation…..and when he put in the crowns….left themin temporary glue and proceeded tokepmaking blue paper alteratiosn for YEARS..NEVER finishing the work..handing me a study model and tellking me to recarve the teeth shapes and fix the new TMJ problems he caused.. HUH????.the finalstraw came in Fallof 2002.. when he snapped off allmy lower left teeth from chin to ear, saiod “ooops!” and come back when you can afford it and then we’ll repair it… and as added insult to it all..drilled a hole into a shattered tooth and into a LIVE nerve and glued apost and crown into it..which reusltedin facial palsy for three years untilit mercifully fellout. I opted for peer review in californnia after my experiencc with court….and went frm a case of village idiots who sat n my request forPeer Reviw for8mont…calledtosay they weesetting up a panelfoexperst forthe following week…and wouldconfirmit by mai… the follwing day I gotaregistered letter informing me they dumped me no a larger board and were recusing themslves…the other board was as profesional..as the violage idots were not locally…in two weeks I was sitting in a an examination chair watching the eyes of five experts glaze and rollover at what they saw. htat was April26th,2005…THe Sacramento board wrote em in Septmber to say they were dismissing my case forexceeding the statute of limiatations…a bald ced lie, which I appealed and showed them I MET every bit of the stated criteria with calendar pages and appointment cards that proved I was sil be treated on the stillunfisnihed work a full for years later than the dnetist told the board… IN November2005, I receievd a copy of the dentist’s Appeal being denied on the grounds he failed to meet the criteria ofthe Appeal process and the ruling in mY FAVOR was to be upheld… WHAT RULING???? I called Sacramento and got a clerk on the phone who read off her computer screen… “the work was deemed negligenet and below commuinity standards, and a substantial refund was requested with the cost of additional damage caused.” a letter would be sent to me spelling out the specifics… and now today… three YEARS and one week later..I have YET to see that ruling, the Sacramento board has refused to release it to me as I sit here very broken and escalating ill health and no means to correct any of the escalating damage he caused. I wastoldayear ago by the legaldepartment fo the CDA who ioversee the Peer Review proces..that by signing the mandatory patient request for records…I signed away my rights to ever know the results fothe peer review examiners. HUH? I have no doubt that the five experts of the panel gave me an honest assessment of the damage done to me….I feel they were professional, knowlegable, and excellent practitioners.. I wuold have felt confident in their assessment and would have abided by their findings…regrettably, we have a Governor who rewards foxes guarding the hen house… and a Peer Review Board more intent in protecting those who commit malpractice than dispensing justice when redress is necessary. My trust in ethical dentistry and the Peer Review Board is now non existent.I am left to suffer in silence with no redress or hope of ever regaining my health , career and ability to earn a living.SO THANKS ADA! THANKS FDA! And thanks Peer Review!Stand up and take a bow for my damaged liver, spleen, eye sight,. hernia and mouthful of shattered teeth you caused. I can only hope that TIME WOUNDS ALL HEELS. . .
