Tooth Whitening Can Improve Seniors’ Dental Health

Dental health in elderly patientsNew research suggests that carbamide peroxide (a popular tooth whitening agent) may have dental health benefits for elderly patients.

Co-author Dr. Van Haywood remarked, "What we've noticed through whitening patients' teeth over the years is that as they bleached, their teeth got squeaky clean and their gingival health improved."

Custom-fit mouth trays with carbamide peroxide can improve tooth and gum health in patients who lack the dexterity for regular brushing and flossing, and can improve symptoms of dry mouth (xerostomia) as well.

TOUCHE’!! I’ve been ‘prescribing’ “Glyoxide” for gingivitis/periodontitis for home care and maintenance for years. I can’t remember just how many colleagues/periodontists criticized me for that treatment, rather than “Periodex”, but it consistently worked, not only with “seniors”, but all patients of any age with gingival/periodontal inflammation.

My thinking: “Glyoxide” releases oxygen, and since most periodontal “bugs” are anaerobic, they can’t survive in an oxygenated environment and when exposed, wallah, they’re eliminated immediately. Also, being an organic rather than an inorganic molecule, my instinct told me that it may be more efficacious for eliminating organic “bugs”, but that remains to be seen through a study which doesn’t exist as far as I know.

My home care protocol: Brush, floss, then add 3/4 drops to the maxillary and another 3/4 drops to the mandibular teeth. Add a half-mouthful of water, swish vigorously for one minute and expectorate, do not rinse.

I must say it has worked in nearly 100% of the cases I suggested this protocol. Even severe periodontitis with significant pockets are cleansed thoroughly with following my protocol.

This post makes me smile. Some 20 years ago, whitening teeth was first discovered as an accidental benefit while treating the gums with peroxide. Now you’re saying the reverse is been newly discovered.
