Dental Molds & Digital Dental Impressions

Digital dental impressions used by 1 in 3 dentistsDigital dental impressions are now used by one in three dentists, this survey found.

Another 25% of dentists plan to incorporate intra-oral digital impressions in their practices.

However, 41% say they’re not interested in transitioning to digital impression technology, preferring to stick with traditional dental molds instead. For most of them (73%), it’s because of price, but others are concerned that the technology isn’t proven.

  • “I will stop practicing dentistry if Cadent/iTero goes out of business. I will NEVER use impression material for crown and dental bridge ever again!” (California dentist)
  • “We have already experienced less remakes and the accuracy is just unbelievable. Although there is a small learning curve, my dental assistants take the digitals as quickly as it would take to try-in trays, and take a traditional regular set polyvinyl.” (North Carolina dentist)
  • “For a pedodontist, there is no need.” (New Jersey pediatric dentist)
  • “I prefer the traditional method!!” (Alabama dentist)
  • “Crown seats are a breeze now. I use iTero because you can make anydental crown.” (Virginia dentist)
  • “Bring down the price, and I'm in.” (Indiana orthodontist)
  • “Why wouldn't you go digital? We did it 5 years ago. It's so much faster and simpler!!” (Minnesota dentist)
  • “I am a Cerec user and am constantly amazed at how well the restorations fit. But I hate having to powder. That is the hardest part of the learning curve.” (New York dentist)
  • “In addition to making my staff very happy, I think it might be a practice builder also.” (Oregon orthodontist also practicing sleep medicine)

I don’t think that one third of dentists use digital impressions yet. Only one out if about 200 in my community uses digital impressions at this time.

We have been using OrthoCAD for IDB for ?2 years now, and their intra-oral scanner since December. Prior to that, we have done in-house indirect bonding for many years.

With that in mind, I can’t imagine not placing brackets digitally. I did worry about not being able to hold a cast in my hand/articulator, but those fears went away very quickly.

I can barely imagine using plaster casts again… I’m looking forward to the day when our appliances can be done this way too…

I am Karl J. Muzikar, DDS. I have been in practice over 25 years and I have been using the iTero/Cadent system for two years now. The reason that I originally chose digital impressions was to address a full mouth reconstruction case for a patient with advanced periodontal disease where all the the teeth were mobile enough that the the VPS impression material captures the mobile teeth in the position that it sets into, not the static position of the teeth without forces on them. I have since advanced to full mouth reconstructions in which I open the vertical dimension of occlusion and the cases are mounted onto my Denar or Hanau articulator using an adapter for the milled upper and lower arches. I WOULD NEVER GO BACK TO THE 20th CENTURY’S TECHNIQUES. The savings in impression material pays for the techology. The May 2010 CDA Journal is must reading if you want to catch up to the 21st century.

We started using Itero/Cadent when we opened our new, paperless office 5 years ago. Digital impressions for crown and bridge are the way to do it! For those patients with high fear or gag reflexes – it’s the way to go. We almost never have to send anything back to the lab for a re-make. Most of the time, it’s a shade problem if any. We are the only one in our area using this technology.
