Dentists Split over Use of Dental Lasers

In our most recent survey, we asked dentists if they use dental lasers for treatment of periodontal disease. Respondents were split right down the middle, with 50% reporting they use lasers and 50% reporting they do not. General dentists were significantly more likely than specialists to use lasers to fight gum disease.

In this survey, the groups most likely to report using lasers were general dentists and rural dentists.

Here are just a few of the comments from our dentists (Read more dentist comments on dental lasers):

  • “I’ve had both good and bad experiences. It seems that careful case selection is very important. Lasers are not magic.” (New Jersey dentist)
  • “Lasers enable early, effective and efficient Interceptive Treatment for Periodontal Disease! They are priceless when used properly!” (New Jersey dentist)
  • “The cost / benefit ratio seems unreasonable with lasers; my choice is the electro-surge.” (California implantologist)
  • “It is the best thing to come along in dentistry in the past 20 years.” (California dentist)
  • “I don’t feel I have adequate training to use the laser that I paid so much for in any regular way. It’s not a comfortable part of any treatment I do at this time. It’s not paying its own bills.” (California dentist)
  • “It has been a godsend for me in so many ways.” (Michigan orthodontist)
  • “It’s difficult to set up, but once it’s working, it is a great tool when doing perio or crown and bridge procedures.” (Canadian dentist)
  • “I don’t currently use one, but I am looking to buy a dental laser within the next several months.” (Illinois dentist)
  • “They’re lousy for hard tissue.” (Arkansas dentist)
  • Laser dentists are my biggest referrers, but they don’t know it. When they get the laser and tell patients they need $6,000 of laser surgery, the patients come to me for second opinions.” (Tennessee periodontist)

“Practice Makeover” consultants, as I call them, can be dangerous to implement but most consultants do have good intentions. Building a healthy practice does not happen with a cookie cutter approach and can’t be accomplished overnight. And, the strength, not the weakness, is in your staff.

Long sustained success requires a committed long term relationship with a “consultant”, if you want to call something of that nature a consulting relationship.

I use the BiolaseMD and Lares Powerlase. My perio results using lasers is colse to phenominal. 7 mm pockets to less than 3 mm pockets are the norm.

I have been using lasers for over 2.5 years for hard and soft tissue issues and cannot imagine practicing without them. Not having these lasers available would be like taking away my high speed and digital radiographs in my office…especially when it comes to perio treatment.

The post treatment trauma, speed of recovery and final results of using the laser is close to miraculous, especially in regard to perio treatment. I am beyond pleased with my choice to use lasers and have never looked back.

I have been using the Periolase for over 4 years and can highly recommend it.

I am a dentist and by definition I am nothing without a patient. When I ask them “What do you want?” They usually say “I want to keep my teeth”.

If you consider 1/3 of adult Americans over 65 have no teeth, that gum disease is the #1 cause of tooth loss, and that the periolase has FDA clearance to reverse gum disease, then the periolase is a win win for the patient and Dentistry.

IMO the use of scalpels and sutures is cruel and barbaric, in the light of what patients are saying regarding their experience with LANAP.

40% of my production in my office is directly from Periodontal services. Mostly due to the use of lasers to reverse the #1 cause of tooth loss in adult Americans.
