Tooth Decay Increases Health Risks for Black Men

Black males at greater risk from tooth decayNew research from the Indiana University School of Dentistry suggests that black males may be at increased risk for total health problems as a result of dental plaque.

The findings indicate that both race and gender play a role in the body’s immune response to tooth decay.

The study included 128 healthy black and white men and women, none of whom had periodontitis or gum disease, who were asked to purposely neglect their oral health. White blood cell activity increased only among the black men. This suggests a possible increase in heart disease risk for this group.
